Sustainability

Every day, we look at how we work to reduce our environmental impact through smarter planning, cleaner energy sources, and efficient production workflows. From the field to export, sustainability is embedded in the decisions we make.

Powered by the Sun

At Matth. Verdegaal, we believe in building a greener future. That’s why we have installed 1,210 solar panels (405 Wp each) across our rooftop; a major stride toward energy independence and environmentally conscious operations. By generating our own clean electricity on-site, we’re reducing and minimizing our carbon footprint. Sustainability isn’t a statement for us; it’s built into how we work. We invest in the planet for the long term.

Recycled crate systems

We use durable transport crates designed for reuse. Whenever possible, we collect and reuse these crates within our own logistics flow, helping to reduce waste and minimize the need for new materials. When crates are not returned to us, customers can easily reuse them in their own operations thanks to their strong, long-lasting design. This flexibility allows the crates to remain in circulation for many seasons, supporting a more sustainable and resource-efficient industry. By choosing materials built for repeated use, we take another step toward reducing our environmental footprint and promoting a more circular approach to flower bulb logistics.

Integrated pest management (IPM)

We take a responsible and preventive approach to crop protection through Integrated Pest Management. By requiring healthy growing conditions, closely monitoring our bulbs, and intervening only when necessary, we reduce the need for chemical treatments and support natural resilience. This results in healthier bulbs, improved sustainability, and consistent quality without compromise.

LED-controlled technology

All lighting in our facilities has been fully replaced with LED-controlled technology, significantly reducing our energy consumption while maintaining optimal working conditions in every department. LED lighting not only uses far less electricity than traditional systems, but also offers greater stability, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance requirements. By switching entirely to LED, we have reduced our carbon footprint and improved the energy efficiency of our storage areas, workspaces, and processing rooms. This ensures that our daily processes are effective and aligned with a greener future for the industry.
