The story of Matth. Verdegaal B.V. began in 1898, when Matthëus Verdegaal founded his own nursery on the Delfweg in Noordwijkerhout. He started by cultivating mainly daffodils and crocuses, later expanding his range to include tulips and hyacinths; the flowers that would shape the company’s legacy.
In the 1930s, the idea arose to export flower bulbs independently, with England as the first market. This venture proved highly successful and led to the establishment of an English branch in 1940, managed by Matthëus’s son Simon Verdegaal. Under his leadership, the company not only expanded its export activities but also began growing “English Daffodils.” Their exceptional quality - especially the renowned Golden Harvest variety - cemented Matth. Verdegaal’s reputation as a leading name in the British bulb industry.
In 1952, the company moved from Noordwijkerhout to Hillegom, shifting its focus entirely to export. Initially trading mainly with the UK, it later grew into new markets across Europe, Asia, and North America.
A. van der Vlugt Sr., who joined as a sales representative in 1938 and became part of the management team in 1945, played a key role in the company’s continued development. His son carried on this work until the end of 2016.
Today, Matth. Verdegaal B.V. is recognized worldwide as a specialist in the preparation and trade of hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, and other flower bulbs. All activities, from cultivation preparation to export, are now managed from our modern facility in Voorhout, from which we proudly serve customers across the globe.
